Vinyl compounds are stabilized by the addition of optionally substituted ammonium carbonate salts. A vinyl compound based composition (I) comprises: (A) a polymerizable compound containing at least one O-vinyl or N-vinyl group; and (B) an ammonium salt of formula (1) NH4<+>-OC(=O)-R (I) R = NH2, -O<->NH4<+>, 1-8C alkyl, 6-18C cycloalkyl or 7-18C alkylcycloalkyl. An Independent claim is included for a process to inhibit the polymerization of polymerizable compounds (A) by the addition of (B).
