PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyhydric alcohol in high selectivity by allowing specific by-products to react with water and circulating them for use in the production between a specific aliphatic aldehyde and formaldehyde in a specific manner in the presence of a catalyst. SOLUTION: In the presence of a basic catalyst mainly comprising a carbonate salt, an aliphatic aldehyde of formula I (R is H or a 1-22C aliphatic group) (for example, n-butyraldehyde) and formaldehyde are subjected to the aldol condensation reaction, followed by the cross Cannizzaro's reaction. In this case, 2-substituted-2-alkenal (for example, ethylacrolein) as one of byproducts is allowed to react with water, when necessary, in the presence of a catalyst, and a liquid containing the resultant 2-substituted-2-alkanal is mixed with formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst and then allowed to react with the aliphatic aldehyde of formula I to obtain the objective compound (for example, trimethylolpropane).
