PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound being phenyldecahydronaphthalene to which an alkenyl group is directly bonded, having wide nematic phase temperature range and small refractive index, anisotropy, enabling driving at low voltage and high speed response and useful for supertwist nematic liquid crystal compositions, or the like. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [R is H or a 1-10C alkyl; (n) is 0-10; Xa to Xc are each H or F; Z is H, a halogen, cyano, cyanate, OH, a (substituted) 1-12C alkyl or the like; decaydronaphthalene ring has trans form and the 2 and 6 positions have each a trans configuration], e.g. a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is produced by a method reacting an alkanal compound of formula III with a Wittig reagent of the formula R-CH=PPh3. Furthermore, in the reagent, when R is an alkyl group, the double bond of formula I often has cis configuration. It this case, the compound of formula I is treated and isomerized with benzenesulfinic acid, or the like, to provide the trans substance.
