PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain the coarsening of Cu alloy phase and to obtain a slab without developing crack, alligator crack, etc., at the hot-rolling time by intensifying the cooling of a crater end part so that the grain diameter of the Cu alloy phase at the center part of the slab becomes a specifized value or lower when a stainless steel containing a specific ratio of Cu is continuously cast. SOLUTION: When the stainless steel containing 1-5 wt.% Cu is continuously cast, in the case of intensifying the cooling of the crater and part to restrain the generation of building, the grain diameter of the Cu alloy phase becomes <=50μm, and this phase is scarcely precipitated in the grain boundary. Even in the case of precipitating this phase in the grain boundary, since the grain diameter of the Cu alloy phase is small, this phase is easily again dissolved into the matrix by heating at the hot-rolling time. Therefore, this Cu alloy phase is difficult to form the liquid film in the grain boundary, and the development of the hot-rolled cracking is restrained. When the slab is cooled with spray-cooling, mist-cooling, etc., a method for controlling the grain diameter of the Cu alloy phase with the cooling condition of the crater end part and adjusting the flowing rate of the cooling water spread onto the crater end part of the slab, is adopted.
