The method involves comparing a measured valve motion signal (32) with a demand signal to produce a control signal that is fed to the output stage. A difference signal (37) formed from the motion signal and demand signal (35) is used by a sliding-mode-regulator to determine the control parameter (45). An Independent claim is also included for the use of a sliding mode regulator regulating the delivery of electrical energy to an electromagnetic device.
