PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently recover a reactional product and produce methyl mercaptan and/or dimethyl sulfide useful for producing dimethyl sulfoxide, etc. by reacting methanol, etc., with a sulfur compound in the vapor phase using a catalyst and treating the resultant reactional product under specific conditions. SOLUTION: When methanol or a compound having methoxy group is reacted with a sulfur compound such as hydrogen sulfide gas in the vapor phase at >=250 deg.C using a catalyst such as alumina with a vapor-phase reactor 2 to produce methyl mercaptan and/or dimethyl sulfide, the resultant reactional product is condensed and the vapor-phase part is then fed to a distillation column 5. The uncondensed component of the distillation column top or a liquid-phase low-boiling component or both are recycled and fed to the vapor-phase reactor 2 to produce the methyl mercaptan or dimethyl sulfide or both which are objective substances from the distillation column 5. Furthermore, the uncondensed component of the distillation column top or liquid-phase low-boiling component or both are preferably fed to a condenser 6 and condensed and the uncondensed component in the condenser 6 is preferably recycled and fed the vapor-phase reactor 2. |
