PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video signal reproducing device where a picture is displayed with a correct aspect ratio in a combination of a video source of a 4:3 full picture or a 4:3 letter box picture and a 16:9 video monitor. SOLUTION: The video signal reproducing device is provided with a 2nd aspect ratio conversion circuit 16 that compresses a picture horizontally or magnifies the picture vertically after the conversion into a sequential scanning video signal, 2nd aspect ratio setting means 14 to set an aspect ratio of a screen of a receiver on which the sequential scanning video signal is displayed and with a 2nd control circuit 15 that receives an output of the 2nd aspect ratio setting means 14 and an output of a source discrimination circuit 5 so as to control the 2nd aspect ratio conversion circuit 16.
