PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup unit that can always photograph a major object intended by a photographer with proper exposure by compensating an automatic exposure AE function of the image pickup unit and to provide its AE correction processing method. SOLUTION: When a shutter button of an image pickup unit 10 is half- depressed, a usual AE function decides an exposure time (t). When the shutter button is fully depressed, an object is photographed by the exposure time (t) and a picture relating to the photographing is stored in a frame memory 24. Simultaneously a color coding processing circuit 28 applies color coding processing to the photographed picture on the basis of a luminance threshold value and a liquid crystal display monitor 32 displays the color-coded picture. When a user observes a color coded display picture and selects a color of the major object, the dynamic range and the gamma characteristic or the like of the picture are decided so that the area of the selected color has a proper luminance and correction processing is conducted on the basis of the decision. Then picture data obtained as a result of the correction processing are stored in a recording section 38.
