The pad (1) is made from two layers of a supple fabric, with the space between them at least partially filled with a granular material that is temporarily compactable. The resulting pad is thin, and either basically rectangular in shape or T-shaped, with its long sides (4, 5) or centre line lying parallel to the horse's spine. On either side of the centre line it has a seam (12, 13) forming a ridge (14) which fits in the central recess of the saddle. The granular material is put in through an opening with a Velcro (RTM) fastening in at least one of its short sides (6, 7).
