Error recovery/concealment in video transmissions

A method and an apparatus for transmitting and recovering a video signal are provided. A transmitter inserts a plurality of resynchronization markers into each group of blocks (GOBs) of a video signal so as to prevent the propagation of error generated in a transmission channel, wherein the insertion of the resynchronization markers includes the steps of assigning the number of resynchronization markers to the respective GOBs and inserting the assigned resynchronization markers into predetermined positions of the corresponding GOB. The positions are determined to minimize the mean error propagation cost according to whether respective macro blocks within each GOB positioned between the resynchronization markers to be inserted are skipped should an error occur. Should an error be detected the data between the resynchronization markers where the error occurred is deleted and replaced by the data from the last recovered error free section.
