PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hydrophilic copolymer which can give a coating film resisting to the adhesion of platelets and improved in biocompatibility by copolymerizing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate with methoxydiethylene glycol methacrylate. SOLUTION: 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate is radically copolymerized with 20-50 mol% methoxydiethylene glycol methacrylate in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator such as benzoyl peroxide, 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile, or 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) to obtain a water-insoluble hydrophilic block copolymer. A solution prepared by dissolving 0.01-10 wt.% above block copolymer in a solvent such as ethanol is brought into contact with a polymeric material such as a polyolefin, a polyacrylonitrile, a polymethyl methacrylate, or a polystyrene, and the wet film is dried to form a coating film on the material.
