The barrier material may define a physical barrier or may incorporate a chemical to define a chemical barrier. The method may be used also for preventing termite penetration along pipes (19) penetrating a slab (13) by providing beads (68) around the pipe (19) within the slab (13) or at the junction between the pipe (19) and slab (13).
