PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suite to high speed drive and to improve contrast by lighting discharging pixel cells on a selected line, address discharging the specified pixel cell among them, selecting the specified pixel cell, keeping the discharge of the specified pixel cell and erasing the discharge of the pixel cells excepting the specified pixel cell. SOLUTION: A positive DC voltage is supplied to a selected scan electrode line Y, and a negative lighting pulse -WP is supplied to a sustaining electrode line Z. A positive address pulse AP is supplied to an address electrode line X of the pixel cell to be light-emitted. Since the address discharge does not occur in the unselected pixel cells, only a self-erase discharge occurs in an edge of a first rise of two step sustaining pulses 2SUSP, -2SUSP. On the other hand, the pixel cell where the address discharge occurs is sustaining- discharged in the edge of the second rise of the two step sustaining pulses 2SUSP, -2SUSP.
