PURPOSE: A remote subscriber line unit provisioning system is provided to have an architecture which eliminates the need for dedicated communication facilities to interconnect the remote subscriber line unit with the central facilities management system and thereby removes the dependence on a proprietary interface, since the standard voice interface of the remote subscriber line unit is used for provision. CONSTITUTION: A remote subscriber line unit provisioning system interconnects an administrative module which locates remotely from a remote subscriber line unit, with the remote subscriber line unit. The remote subscriber line unit is directly connected to a local central office switch by a plurality of communication lines. And, the remote subscriber line unit provisioning system comprises a unit for interconnecting the administrative module with the switch fabric of the local central office switch; and a unit for initiating a voice communication connection from the administrative module through the switch fabric to the remote subscriber line unit over a selected one of a plurality of the communication lines.
