A recording system having a charging function which stores an identification signal for identifying the content of an information signal to be copied in a recorder when the information signal is recorded on a recording medium, compares for reference, before the copying, the stored identification signal with the identification signal of the information signal to be copied and recorded according to whether or not the same information signal has been recorded in the past by the recorder, and judges whether or not the recording is possible under the condition of paying the charge according to the result of the reference. If the information signal has been copied in the past, the copying is permitted under the condition of paying the charge, thereby preventing unlimited copying of the first generation.
