PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image forming device which replace a document, without storing image information in a memory. SOLUTION: A holding part, which is branched from a U-turn path 18 between a document separation part 109 and a document read part 111 and is provided with a holding roll 14 to hold a document, and a selection means which is provided with flappers A11, B17, and C15 to select which of the holding part and the U-turn path 18 the document should be carried to, an upper holding path 12, and a lower holding path 16 are provided, and a first document carried first is held to carry a second document which is later carried to the document read part 111 first.
