PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shoreten an address period for driving plural scanning electrodes by impressing scanning pulses to the scanning electrodes while driving address electrodes in accordance with display data, and in the case of turning on a cell arranged on the intersecting position of both electrodes, overlapping a part of a continuous scanning pulse. SOLUTION: Plural address electrodes are arrayed vertically to a rear glass substrate and a rib (diaphragm) is arranged between plural address electrodes and X and Y electrodes are alternately arranged horizontally to a front glass substrate. A scanning pulse to be impressed to each Y electrode has two periods, i.e., a period having high voltage -Vy1 sufficient for generating electric discharge and a period having lower voltage -Vy2 for pulling electric charge generated by the discharge thereafter and the period of voltage -Vy2 and a succeeding scanning pulse are timewisely overlapped. Provided that the period of voltage -Vy1 is not superposed to the succeeding scanning pulse. In addition, a scanning pulse is impressed to the Y electrode by a single phase driving procedure.
