PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image pickup device closer to the photopic vision and the scotopic vision of a human eye by providing a control part adjusting exposure to gradually approach a target exposure value obtained by photometry by a photometric device to adjust and reach the target exposure value. SOLUTION: The device is provided with the control part adjusting exposure so as to gradually approach the target exposure value obtained by photometry with the photometric device to adjust and reach the target exposure value. In this device, a CPU 38 controls an image pickup timing controller 39, an iris controller 40 and a video signal processor 34. The CPU 38 grasps the difference of light quantities between front frame data and this-time data and the dynamic range of an image pickup element 32 from a frame memory 41 and receives an image pickup signal from the circuit 34 to control output to the circuit 34 when the difference of the light quantities of one frame is large and with respect to the rapid change of the difference from dark to light and from light to dark due to the variation of the difference the light quantities.
