PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a stable liquid supplying operation by detecting a condition of a liquid in a liquid containing section that generates a negative pressure by being deformed. SOLUTION: A negative pressure generating member housing chamber 10 houses a negative pressure generating member 13 for holding a liquid and supplies the liquid to a recording head 60. An ink tank 50 is loaded into negative pressure generating member housing chamber 10 with a communication pipe 71 therebetween. The ink tank 50 has a dual structure of an outer wall 51 and an inner wall 54 capable of generating a negative pressure by being deformed. Ink is contained in an ink containing section 53 which is an inside space of the inner wall 54. A light-emitting section 81 for emitting a light is provided in a portion above the ink tank 50. A light-receiving section 82 for detecting a light quantity of the light passing through the ink tank 50 is provided in a portion beneath the ink tank 50. An ink liquid level in the ink containing section 53 is detected as a residual ink quantity based on the received light level detected by the light-receiving section 82.
