PURPOSE: A text display having a real time electronic dictionary and a method thereof are provided to inform users of the meanings of the words displayed on a text display system. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling a text display having a real time electronic dictionary includes four steps. The text display includes at least one electronic dictionary database, and displays a video image and a caption image at a time on a screen. At the first step, a text data is separated from the received signals. At the second step, information of the words included in the text data is acquired consulting on the dictionary included in the text display. At the third step, an image signal on the word information is generated. At the forth step, the image signal form the third step is mixed with the video signal and displayed on the screen.
