PURPOSE: A continuous process for the production of magnesium from magnesium oxide and methane is provided. CONSTITUTION: A continuous process for the production of elemental magnesium(9-1) from feed materials comprising magnesium oxide(5) and a light hydrocarbon gas(6), comprises: continuously feeding a feed stream comprising the magnesium oxide(5) and the light hydrocarbon gas(6) directly into a high temperature reaction zone, reacting the magnesium oxide and gas at a temperature of about 1400°C or greater in the reaction zone to provide a continuous product stream(12) comprising reaction products including elemental magnesium(9-1), continuously quenching the product stream, and separating the elemental magnesium(9-1) from other reaction products(9-2).
