Cations present in aqueous solutions are separated by contacting the solution with an ion exchanger comprising an ammonium salt of phosphotungstic, phosphomolybdic, arsenotungstic, or arsenomolybdic acid at a pH below the neutral point. The absorbed ions may be recovered and separated by elution with acidified ammonium salt solutions of increasing concentration. Alternatively the ion exchanger may be dissolved in alkali, the solution passed through an anion exchange resin, and the effluent evaporated to dryness. The ammonium salt of the heteropoly acid may be used in granular or pelleted form and may be associated with silica gel or a fibrous substance, e.g. asbestos. The process is used for treatment of aqueous solutions of fission products resulting from extraction of solutions of irradiated uranium with organic solvents.
