PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyphenylene ether resin composition excellent in mechanical properties, such as stiffness and impact strength, by compounding a polyphenylene ether resin with a copolymer containing ethylene units and alkenylaromatic hydrocarbon units in a specified molar ratio in a specified wt. ratio of the former polymer to the latter. SOLUTION: This composition comprises (A) a polyphenylene ether resin and (B) a copolymer containing 1-58 mol% ethylene units and 42-55 mol% alkenylaromatic hydrocarbon units in a wt. ratio of A/B of (1/99)-(99/1). Preferably, the ratio of the area of a peak appearing in 34.0-36.0 ppm to that appearing in 36.0-38.0 ppm in a 13C-NMR spectrum of ingredient B is 0.01-0.25. Ingredient B has a backbone which has structures wherein one methylene group separates carbon atoms, each bonded to an aromatic hydrocarbon group, from each other, structures wherein two methylene groups separate, and structures wherein three or more methylene groups separate.
