PURPOSE: Methods for producing perfluorocarbon mono methanol and dimethanols are provided in which suitable perfluoroalkyl esters of perfluoroalkanoic acids are reduced. The methods can provide branched perfluorocarbon mono methanol or dimethanols with good purity and yields. CONSTITUTION: A method for preparing a perfluorocarbon methanol, the method comprising: reacting a perfluorocarbon ester of a perfluorocarbon carboxyl acid with a reducing reagent under reducing conditions, such that a perfluorocarbon methanol is prepared. The perfluorocarbon ester of a perfluorocarbon carboxyl acid is represented by the formula RrC(O)OR"t, in which Rf and R"f are each independently a substituted or unsubstituted perfluoroalkyl group, wherein R"f is -CF2R"'f, in which R"'f is a perfluoroalkyl group. The reducing reagent comprises a metal hydride, a hydrogen source and a catalyst.
