PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately extract a pattern when pattern extraction is performed again after parts corresponding to a pattern is erased from an image in the order of pattern- extracted elements by erasing the parts corresponding to the pattern. SOLUTION: A ruled-line frame extraction part 103 extracts a ruled-line frame by using information on an extracted ruled line. A ruled-line erasure part 106 removes pixels corresponding to the ruled-line frame from the document image by using information on the extracted ruled-line frame to obtain a frame-erased image. Then a ruled-line extraction part 102 extracts a ruled-line again from the frame-erased image. A ruled- line erasure part 105 erases pixels corresponding to the ruled lines from the frame- erased image by using the information on the extracted ruled lines to obtain a ruled- line erased image. Lastly, a preprint character string is extracted from the obtained ruled-line erased image. This procedure makes it possible to correct respective pattern elements by a ruled-line correction part 108, a ruled-line correction part 109, and a preprint character correction part 110 after the ruled-line frame, ruled lines, and preprint characters are extracted, and respective pattern elements are corrected before being registered finally.
