PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a map generation device capable of giving distance feeling onto a map and surely reaching a destination by means of generated map data. SOLUTION: In the method for extracting road information 103 and building information 104 from map data 101, taking out only information required for moving from a start to a destination from data and newly generating one piece of map data, information being a reference during movement from the start to the destination is to be added. For giving distance feeling onto a map, an actual distance is measured from route information from the searched start to the destination and it is plotted with map data, or a route is displayed and a scale and a mark on the distance are added or an explanation is added so that an operator does not make an error at a corner.
