A process which is favorable for industrially producing Apelin on a mass scale. This process for producing Apelin or its salt is characterized in that a fused protein or peptide constructed by ligating Apelin optionally having at the N-end a methionine residue, which may be oxidized, to the N-end of a protein or peptide having cysteine at the N-end is subjected to a cleavage reaction of the peptide bond in the amino group side of the cysteine residue. Use of this process makes it possible to industrially produce on a mass scale Apelin which is usable as a remedy, a preventive, etc. for specific diseases.
