A special solid fuel combustion unit (4) is used in conjunction with the air compression system for a hot gas-operated internal combustion engine and a gas or liquid fuel feed is provided before or in the engine. There is adiabatic relaxation (5) of the hot air and heat feedback (7) of exhaust gas into the combustion unit. The air compression system comprises a counterflow heat exchanger (1), in one direction of which fresh atmospheric air is fed also at below atmospheric pressure, whereby it is liquefied. At the end of the heat exchanger is a pump (9), which pumps the liquid air into the counterflow channel at approximately 30 to 40 bar pressure. Heat exchange is effected between aspirated and highly compressed air.
