Magnetic material comprises a nickel-iron-molybdenum alloy with a low magnetic strain constant. Novel magnetic material contains (in atomic %) 77-82% Ni, 15-21% Fe and less than 6% Mo and has a magnetic strain constant ( lambda s) of either (a) -1 /* 10<-6> to 0 or (b) 0 to 1/*10<-6>. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a magnetic head with a magnetic pole layer of the above magnetic material of type (a) under compressive stress; (ii) a magnetic head with a magnetic pole layer of the above magnetic material of type (b) under tensile stress; (iii) a magnetic head with a magnetic screen layer of the above magnetic material; and (iv) a magnetic recording device employing one of the above magnetic heads.
