PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an emulsifier which can give an emulsion improved in stability during emulsion polymerization to give a polymer emulsion easily de-emulsified in polymer recovery and give a polymer having markedly improved properties by using a compound having a both a 1,3-dioxolane ring and a copolymerizable unsaturation. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I is used. In the formula, R1 and R2 are each a 1-20C alkyl, an alkenyl or H; provided that they can not be H simultaneously; R3 is H or methyl; X is H or an ionic hydrophilic group (an anionic, cationic or amphoteric group); A is a 2-4C alkylene or a substituted alkylene; n is 0-100, and when n is 2 or greater, (AO)n is a homopolymer comprising repeating units of -(AO)-(AO)-(AO)- or may be a block or random copolymer comprising at least two types of repeating units each having different substituents A (A1, A2 and so forth).
