The quantity of material per unit length, e.g. tobacco in a cigarette rod 53, leaving a processing plant is kept constant by varying the width of a groove in a feed wheel 45 in response to errors detected, e.g. by a radiation gauge 27, 28. The feed wheel is in two, flanged, halves (Fig. 2, not shown), one fixed and the other axially moved by an actuator 31. The bottom of the groove is perforated so that suction, applied to the centre 47, picks up tobacco from a stream 44. The tobacco is released when it becomes opposite a blanking sector 56, and a trimming knife 48 at constant height ensures a uniform depth of tobacco at 49; surplus 51 is re-cycled.
