PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a metal oxide structural form with large surface area relative to its small volume, usable in electrical insulators, conductors, solid electrolytes, fluorescent character display tubes, EL elements, ceramic capacitors, actuators, laser oscillation elements, cold cathode elements, ferroelectric memories, piezoelectrics, thermistors, varistors, etc., as a surface modifier intended for surface protective agents, anti-reflection agents, antimicrobial/stain-proofing effects, etc., as a catalyst or its carrier or the like in vapor phase and/or liquid phase, and to provide a method for producing the above metal oxide structural form. SOLUTION: This metal oxide structural form which has metal oxide projections each with a sectional diameter of 0.01-10,000μm calculated as circle and the ratio of length to the above diameter of >=0.1 is obtained by releasing one or more kinds of volatile or sublimable metal compound(s) capable of forming the corresponding metal oxide(s) through reaction with compound(s) in the atmosphere and spraying the metal compound(s) on a substrate with its temperature set at a level higher than the temperature of the metal compound(s).
