PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply a conventional basic design as it is even if refrigerant to be used for a rotary compressor is changed to refrigerant made out of carbon deoxide. SOLUTION: A compression means 12 is formed in such a way that a front stage compression element 20 is directly connected in series with a rear stage compression element 30, and a refrigerant insertion device 50 is provided. The refrigerant insertion device 50 is formed out of a temperature detector 55 detecting the temperature of refrigerant discharged out of the rear stage compression element 30, and of a flow rate adjuster 53 injecting cooling refrigerant into the compression chamber of the rear stage compression element 30 and the like. When the temperature and pressure of refrigerant compressed by the rear stage compression element 30 so as to be discharged, are found to have been in excess of the temperature and pressure set in advance, the flow rate adjuster 53 is actuated based on a signal from the temperature detractor 55 so as to allow cooling refrigerant to be injected into the compression chamber. By this constitution, the temperature and pressure of refrigerant within the compression chamber can be lowered down.
