PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain detection accuracy, prevent detection error, and also eliminate a diagnosing work of various functions of a rolling failure detector in the off line which required a lot of work load by diagnosing the function of the detector of rolling failure of rolls easily. SOLUTION: The output value of a rotation detector 7 when a detection roll 6 of a rolling failure detecting equipment 1 is in contact with a fixed wall 10 is compared with preset proper value in rotating state of the detection roll 6 in the rolling failure state of guide rolls 3, and on the basis of the comparison result, whether the function of the detection roll 6 or the rotation detector 7 is normal or not is judged. On the basis of comparison between the output value of the rotation angle detector 12 when a friction plate 4 of the rolling failure detecting equipment 1 is in contact with a free roll 11 and the preset proper value in rotating state of the guide rolls 3 when the friction plate 4 is in contact under pressure, whether the function of the forced roll rotating mechanism 5 is normal or not is judged.
