QUARTZ-BASED OPTICAL FIBER

摘要

PURPOSE:To provide a quartz-based optical fiber having broad transmission range and excellent radiation resistance, by doping fluorine to a germanium- doped quartz core. CONSTITUTION:The objective quartz-based optical fiber has a graded index-type fiber structure composed of a quartz core doped with about 10mol% germanium and about 30ppm of fluorine, and a quartz clad doped with about 30ppm of fluorine. The structural defects of germanium caused by irradiation can be compensated with fluorine by the use of the core having the above composition. Furthermore, germanium can be stabilized by fluorine, and the conversion of hydrogen in the fiber to OH group can be suppressed. A quartz-based optical fiber enabling the stable transmission of light for a long period and having high reliability can be produced by this process.
