In a method of packing a railway track, which has been lifted to the correct height by a track packing machine 1, the packing tools 10 penetrating the ballast to an adjustable depth, the depth of penetration of the tools 10 is adjustable in dependence of the amount of lifting of the rail required locally in each case. In the arrangement shown the rail 4 is lifted by a clamp 25 and the ballast is packed beneath the sleepers 5 by tamping tools 10 operated in a known manner. The machine operates as follows. The upper chamber of a cylinder 11 is fed with a pressure medium from a pump 16 to move a piston 12 downwards to displace a pressure medium in the lower chamber of the cylinder 11 into a cylinder 23 to lift a piston 24 against a spring 26 and, through the rail clamp 25, the rail 4. Once the rail 4 is lifted to the desired height a valve 22 is closed to enable the clamp 25 to hold the rail 4 at the desired height and to prevent further movement of the piston 12. The carrier 3, supporting the tamping tools 10 is then lowered into contact with the piston 12 and determines the depth of penetration of the tools 10 into the ballast. |
