A fuel injector for self-igniting internal combustion engines comprising an injector body (10), wherein a valve seat surface (14) is embodied on the injection side of a drill hole (12), and a valve needle (30) that opens counter to the effect of a closing force in a direction opposite to that of the fuel flowing from one or several injection holes (20). The valve needle is moveably guided in the inlet area of the drill hole (12), facing away from the end of the injection side, and has a closing surface (31) on the side opposite the valve seat surface (14). Said surface cooperates with the surface of the valve seat (14). The invention is characterized in that the cross-section of the injection hole widens outwards in the direction of the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine.
