A transmission 16 has hydraulic clutches which engage/disengage gears in the transmission and are operated by solenoid valves 30A-30E controlled by an electric control module 28. A system which ensures that, during an electrical malfunction or power failure, the transmission responds appropriately is provided. The system in the event of an individual solenoid valve 30A-30E fault, eg short-to-battery, short-to-ground and open circuit faults, keeps the transmission in gear by not disengaging the corresponding clutch 30A-30E. A short-to-battery fault will allow shifting to an available gear whose clutch utilizes the faulty solenoid. If there is a short-to-ground fault the transmission will latch a current gear or shift to a predetermined gear whose clutch does not utilize a faulty solenoid. The electric control module 28 receives signals from various sensors including engine speed sensor 32, transmission input speed sensor 34, and transmission output speed sensors 38, 40 etc. |
