A chemical reaction pressure vessel has an outer wall of prestresed concrete which resists the internal presure, and an inner wall which protects the outer wall from heat and chemical attack; a filling of liquid or gas is placed between the two walls and is pressurized to the vessel interior pressure, thus transmitting all retaining stresses to the outer wall and leaving the inner wall unstressed. The filling liquid is preferably water, and it is cooled by coolant pipes immersed in it. The water is pressurized either directly through a diaphragm valve and passage passing through the inner wall, or indirectly. The inner wall is of ceramic or tufa, and is steel lined. A cylindrical and a spherical vessel are described.
