PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce influences that are caused by the erroneous extraction of an area which is estimated to be equivalent to the primary part of an image. SOLUTION: Plural face candidate areas, (e.g. areas A-D), which are estimated to be equivalent to the face of a person are extracted based on the data on an image to be processed, and overlap degree is calculated for a pair of face candidate areas which overlap each other. Then a weight mark is set to every face candidate area so that the weight mark of a face candidate area, which is overlapping another face candidate area is higher than a face candidate area which is not overlapping another face candidate area, and also the weight mark of a face candidate area becomes higher as its overlapping degree is increased with another face candidate area. An area equivalent to the face of a person is extracted from every face candidate area, by comparing the weight mark of every face candidate area with its threshold, and the weight mean value obtained by weighting the density value of every face candidate are according to its weight mark is calculated as the face area density.
