PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the image reader where mis-discrimination for detecting a black letter caused by overshoot or the like in a scanning system is eliminated so as to enhance the image quality of a copy image by changing a threshold of a signal processing section to detect the black letter between an image tip area (an area where the scanning system is not yet stable at a prescribed speed) and its succeeding area, to provide the read image discrimination method and the storage medium. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with an image read means 1, an image attribute discrimination means 2 that discriminates whether a pixel is a black/white pixel or a color pixel, an image component separate means 3 that separates a read image into a line component and a dot component, a scanning means 4, an area signal generating means 5 that generates a black letter area signal, a threshold revision means 6 that sets a threshold value for an astable area of a speed of a 1st mirror unit and a threshold area for a stable area, a black letter pixel discrimination means 7, and an image processing means 8 that outputs image data depending on the black letter pixel or the color pixel.
