PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cholesteric type liquid crystal polymer permitting the application of a liquid crystal polymer solution-coating method, thereby capable of being easily and efficiently be produced in a large area, capable of being crosslinked by a practical means, having an excellent monodomain-orienting property, and capable of forming a Grandjean oriented optical element excellent in heat resistance. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition capable of being crosslinked is prepared by adding a low molecular compound having one or more acryloyl or methacryloyl groups to a side chain type cholesteric liquid crystal polymer having segments of the formula [R1, R2 are each H or methyl; A, B and D are each an organic group; 1<=(n)<=100], segments for imparting a nematic orientation property and segments having optically active sites as repeating units. An optical element exhibiting circular dichroism is prepared by subjecting the liquid crystal composition to Grandjean orientation and subsequently applying an electromagnetic wave irradiation and/or a heating treatment to the treated composition to crosslink the composition. An optical member is prepared by disposing a phase difference layer for converting circularly polarized light into linearly polarized light on an optical element.
