PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sound absorbing material simultaneously satisfying excellent sound absorbing property, weather resistance, fire resistance, workability, water absorbing property and air permeability. SOLUTION: This sound absorbing material is formed of a core material 2 and a surface skin material 1 enclosing the core material 2. The surface skin material 1 has an air permeability measured on the basis of JIS L-1096 of 80 cc/cm2/sec or more, the core material 2 is formed of a fiber assembly with a specific gravity of 0.02 q/cc or more, a surface hardness of 50 deg. or more, and a thickness of 50 mm or more in which fibers are partially adhered to each other, and the core material 2 and the surface skin material 1 are formed of synthetic fibers of the same kind.
