A method and system for processing a video image is provided. A video came ra system in the context of non-uniform lighting includes a module for developi ng a shutter speed control signal, analog gain control signal and color balance signals from pixel luminance over one filed of video. The control signals are used to control t he camera during the next field. During one field, the speed control signal and the analog gain signal target dark areas of the image. During the next field, they target th e bright areas of the image. Every pixel is within a workable range of luminance in at leas t one of two alternate fields. As the color balance settings are adjusted according to th e exposure settings and the luminance level, consistent hue values are maintained betwe en alternate fields. A pixel color detection circuit examines each pixel based on a color offset signal to determine whether it is in a color region of interest.</SDO AB>
