PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for oxychlorination of ethylene to 1,2- dichloroethane having higher ability than copper (II) chloride or other copper compds. by constituting the catalyst from copper (II) oxychloride (Cu(OH)Cl) as the active component. SOLUTION: This catalyst for oxychlorination of ethylene to 1,2- dichloroethane consists of copper (II) oxychloride (Cu(OH)Cl) as the active component carried on an inert porous oxide, alumina or alumina-silica mixture containing >=80 wt.% alumina. Thereby, higher ability can be obtd. than copper (II) chloride (CuCl2) or copper (II) chloride such as copper (II) hydroxychloride expressed by Cu2(OH)3Cl and other copper compds.
