The system includes a destination input unit, a cartographic data storage device, a positioning device, a route calculating device, and a pictogram display adaptor, a data processor and a display. Any changes to the direction of travel within a selected section of the route are indicated by separate direction indicator which is separately adapted to the particular cartographic conditions. The selectable section of the route is selected based on the particular cartographic conditions and/or the speed of the vehicle. An Independent claim also included for a method of displaying cartographic information for a navigation system.
