PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a butyl rubber polymer having >=400,000 average molecular weight with good rate of change of isobutylene in an easily controllable method in which an inexpensive and inactive aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent can be used without using methyl chloride. SOLUTION: This improved production of butyl rubber consists of a process in which a 4-8C monoolefin monomer is brought into contact with a 4-14C multiolefin monomer in the presence of a catalyst mixture which comprises a compound selected from a group comprising an aliphatic hydrocarbon diluent, a large amount of dialkylaluminum chloride, a little amount of alkylaluminum dichloride, a trace amount of water, aluminoxane and their mixture at a temperature range of about -100 to about +50 deg.C.
