PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymethine compound having extremely large ultraviolet ray absorbing ability, i.e., molecular extinction coefficient in UV-A region. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [R1 is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an aralkyl or the like; R2 is a (hydroxy)alkyl, an O-containing alkyl, an aralkyl or a cycloalkyl; R3 is H, an alkyl, OR2 or a halogen; A is an alkylene, an alkenylene, an alkynylene or the like], e.g. 5,5'-[(1,2-ethanedilyl) bis-(oxy)bis(3-methoxy-4,1-phenylene)bis(4-cyano-2,2-dimethyl-4-penten -3-one). The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting, e.g. an acylacetonitrile derivative of the formula CN-CH2-COR1 with a diformyl derivative of formula II in the presence of a base catalyst in an organic solvent.
