PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably and inexpensively obtain arachidonic acid having action lowering serum choresterol by continuously culturing Parietochloris incisa of fresh-water unicellular fine algae having morphologic, physiological and chemical characteristics under aeration-agitation conditions. SOLUTION: Parietochloris incisa of algae is continuously cultured under aeration-agitation conditions so as to accumulate higher unsaturated fatty acid, especially arachidonic acid in large amounts to produce arachidonic acid. These algae are fresh-water unicellular fine algae having morphologic, physiological and chemical characteristics and the cell is spherical or egg-shaped and have about 10-15μm diameter and the proliferation of the cell comprises an aplanospore and a zoospore and the zoospore has two flagella and the basal body is counterclockwise arranged and the algae have pyrenoid in the chloroplast and have living circumference under definite conditions and can be grown even at a low temperature of about 5 deg.C and optimum temperature for growth is 15-25 deg.C and accumulates relatively large amount of highly unsaturated fatty acid in the cell in a stationary growth phase. |
