PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for computing the residual capacity of a cell at a little calculation error wherein the rapid change of the discharge condition of the cell is avoidable. SOLUTION: For estimating the discharge characteristics after a final previous discharge quantity Qdo is reached just before charging, a slowly learning capacity compression factor P', lower than the capacity compression factor P=(Qd1-Qd0)/(Qdx-Qdo) is obtd. and a capacity compressing operation is made to multiply the previous discharge quantity of the previous discharge characteristic by this compression ratio P', thereby estimating the future discharge characteristic. Thus, the capacity compressing operation is lessened to result in that the discharge characteristic is gradually rewritten even when the compression ratio P is high, and hence the rapid change of the discharge condition due to the rapid change of the residual capacity can be avoided.
